Indie recording artist The Salesman has released an album of quirky indie pop songs intended to uplift the spirits of people struggling with anxiety and depression.
Chris Egan, the solo singer-songwriter behind the Salesman, says “This is an album for the anxious, depressed, frustrated, and despaired people who feel like things won’t ever get better. It’s for those people who feel like, though their life may look fine from an outside perspective—perhaps, even from their own perspective—they can’t shake their negative thoughts. It’s for the frustrated dreamers who know they are capable of something great, but haven’t fulfilled—or perhaps even found—their purpose. It’s for people like me.”
While Egan says that the songs are “not supposed to be some false beacon of hope”, Egan hopes that using his songs to share his own struggles with anxiety and depression will help people who feel like they are suffering alone in their mental health issues to know there are other people out there who feel the same way. He hopes that if someone relates to the songs or the lyrics, it may help them feel a sense of community, belonging, and connection that so many people today seem to be lacking.
The songs themselves include both full band indie-rock and indie-pop arrangements complete with modern and retro synthesizer sounds as well as songs that are closer to a minimal acoustic indie-folk style.
Egan’s songwriting is influenced by modern songwriters like James Mercer of The Shins and eclectic classic alternative rock groups like The Kinks.
